Medicinal uses

:

It is sweet and bitter in taste, tonic, aphrodisiac, galactogogue, roborant, antidiarrhoetic, refrigerant, antidysenteric, diuretic and demulcent.

Dose

:

Swarasa (juice) 10-20 ml; Kwatha (decoction) 50-100 ml; Churna (powder) 3-6 gms.

Important formulations

:

Shatavari Mandura, Narayana Taila.

Home remedies:

  1. It should be used to increase breast milk in the dose of 5 gm along with milk.
  2. It is also beneficial in various gynecological disorders like miscarriage, discharges per vagina, etc. recommended dose is 5 gm along with milk.
  3. It also provides Rasayana effects, if one use daily.

 

Summary:

Recent studies show that Shatawari has the properties like nutritive, tonic, galactagogue, aphrodisiac and antispasmodic. It can be used safely in consumption, epilepsy, diarrhoea, blood dysentery, haemophilic disorders, and swellings. One research team has evaluated it for antiulcer and antioxidant activity with positive results. Study also indicated an increase in antioxidant defense, that is, enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase, and ascorbic acid, increased significantly, whereas a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation was observed. A. racemosus was more effective in reducing gastric ulcer.
